Grouse and Rosy-finches 2018

Courtesy of James P. Smith

The last ten days of April saw Birdfinders back in Colorado with a private group from Holland in search of grouse, quail and rosy-finches. We did incredibly well to find almost all of the 'key' species and although most of these were found inside Colorado, we also enjoyed side trips to Nebraska, Kansas and Wyoming. The level of bird finding by our Dutch group was impressive to say least resulting in a fine list of ‘incidental’ finds including Wilson’s Phalarope, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Dusky Flycatcher and Grasshopper, Field, Black-throated, Clay-coloured and Cassin’s Sparrows, not to mention a mini-fall of around 30 Harris’s Sparrow on one particular day.

Much of the route involved passing through majestic scenery, each state having its own charm and appeal, and each offering something unique in terms of birds and mammals. On a personal level this was a challenging, yet extremely enjoyable trip to lead. Many thanks Remco Hofland and his friends for such a thoroughly rewarding trip, and to the generous colleagues and friends that helped along the way. We can't wait to return in 2019!
