Guianan Cock-of-the-rock

GUYANA

FEBRUARY 2007
TOUR NEWS

Exploratory tour

Guyana is the up-and-coming new destination in South America and we’ve been there checking things out! There are over 100 species of birds endemic to the ‘Guyanan Shield’ area of South America (French Guyana, Guyana, Suriname and adjacent areas of Venezuela and Brazil) and Guyana is the easiest place to see many of the them. Although French Guyana, Guyana and Suriname all have a relatively poor infrastructure, Guyana has by far the best and this combined with a good selection of lodges and internal airlinks make it the best place to visit on this part of the continent. Mouth-watering specialities include Rufous Crab-hawk, Harpy Eagle, Grey-winged Trumpeter, Guianan Toucanet, Toco Toucan, Blood-coloured Woodpecker, Guianan Streaked-antwren, Capuchinbird, Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, Pompadour Cotinga, Bearded Tachuri, Finsch’s Euphonia and Red Siskin, and ALL of these were seen on our familiarisation tour.

Guyana has some of the most pristine rainforests left in South America and the landscape varies from coastal lowland forests and mangroves to Tepuis (Mount Roraima is the highest mountain in South America outside the Andes) on the Venezuelan border. Additionally, we will be including a visit to the spectacular Kaieteur Falls, only accessible by air and deep in the heart of the rainforest. At 741 feet, it is the largest single-drop waterfall in the world and bigger than the Niagra and Victoria Falls combined! Birdfinders are going to be offering this fabulous new destination in November 2009 and the itinerary will be appearing on this website soon. Be sure to book early, as this new tour is certain to be very popular!
